Why Routine Cleanings are Important
Most people don’t realize that gum disease is linked to a plethora of health issues; therefore, routine checkups and cleanings are essential for your overall health.
We recommend that you have your teeth cleaned professionally by a dentist every six months if you are in good oral health. During the visit, the patient can expect to receive a cancer screening of the neck, throat, and mouth, a comprehensive exam from the doctor, a cleaning, oral hygiene instructions, and any other specific treatment that may need to be taken care of at that time. These visits are extremely important, as preventive medicine is the best medicine!

Deep Cleaning
This cleaning is not your regular 6-month cleaning but is still performed by your dental hygienist. This advanced cleaning is used if you have periodontal disease. We want to help get your oral health better by using preventive measures and taking an approach to get you in better health quickly to prevent further decay.
Periodontal Disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums, bone, and surrounding tissue. It is the major cause of adult tooth loss, and affects 3 out of 4 adults at some point in their life! Unlike most diseases that give us early warning signs, Periodontal Disease progresses silently, often with no pain at all. Recent research is now linking Periodontal Disease to strokes, heart attacks, lung infections, pre-term low-birth weight infants, and more! It may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly. Some of the warning signs include:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Bleeding while brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose or separating teeth
- Changes in your bite
In early stages, most treatment involves root planning and scaling, also known as periodontal therapy or deep cleaning. Special instruments are used to remove the bacteria and calculus that has formed in these deep pockets. Antibiotics and/or antimicrobials may also be used to supplement the effects of periodontal therapy. More advanced cases of Periodontal Disease may require surgical treatment.
